Keyword Discovery Tools

Now that you know the details and benefits of Keyword Research, you can explore different tools to help you discover new keywords and phrases for your business.  Here is a list of free and premium tools to use to develop your marketing and SEO strategy.

Ubersuggest is a free SEO tool that specializes in generating new keyword ideas that allows you to reverse engineer your competitors’ SEO, content marketing, and social media marketing strategy.

Ubersuggest allows you to get insight into the strategies that are working for others in your market so you can adapt them and improve them to gain an edge.

This tool was originally created as a tool that scraped Google Suggest terms but has recently expanded its feature set.

Google AdWords Keyword Tool

Google AdWords Keyword Tool has three columns showing keyword ideas.  Here is what each column will tell you about each list of keywords:

  • Competition – This column gives you a sense of how many advertisers are bidding for a certain keyword. This data can help you determine how competitive ad placement is.
  • Global Monthly Searches – This is the approximate 12-month average of user queries for the keyword on Google search.
  • Local Monthly Searches – If you specify a country or language for your search, this is the approximate 12-month average number of user queries for the keyword for those countries and languages.

Keyword Analysis with Moz

A Pro membership with Moz gives you access to a tool called Keyword Difficulty & SERP Analysis.

It will show you the percentage of difficulty for each keyword which gives you an idea of how hard it will be to rank high for it.

It will also show the top ten sites ranked for each keyword, each listed with its domain authority and the number of root domains linking to it.

WordStream’s Free Keyword Tool

WordStream’s keyword research tool provides keyword ideas and search volume but also gives you the ability to filter by industry and country to get targeted data.

If you connect your Google Ads account (formerly known as Google AdWords), you’ll get personalized competition and CPC data based on your business’s metrics, as well as an Opportunity Score that helps you prioritize where to start.

A higher Opportunity Score represents a keyword with more volume but less competition.  These should be targeted first for the best and fastest results.

SEMrush is another great tool that allows for extensive keyword research with both a premium and free version.

The free version provides very useful information, from organic search volume and CPC to competitive info and a list of organic search results for each keyword.

Upgrading the paid version gives you more in-depth analysis with 10,000 results per report but depending upon your goals the free version might suffice.

Microsoft Ads Keyword Research Tools

Microsoft Ads (formerly Bing) like Google has its own keyword research tool to help people running ads on their search engine make smart choices about which keywords to bid on.  Their data is all based on organic search —nothing paid.

Microsoft Ads Intelligence

Microsoft Ads Intelligence is an online interface for keyword research and also a downloadable desktop tool that integrates with Excel.

It’s specifically designed to optimize your PPC performance within their ad network.

It lets you download your keyword campaigns onto your desktop eliminating duplicates and performs keyword expansions based on ones you’re already using.

Google Chrome Hack

This is not so much a tool, but a handy trick to have up your sleeve.

After you open a certain web page within Chrome, right-click and select “View Page Source”.  A new tab will open up with loads of code.

The “Command+F” function will then get you straight to what you’re looking for.  Search for tags like H1, H2, title, or keyword to find the keywords your competitors are optimizing for,

This is more of a monitoring tool than a keyword research tool specifically for mining. Twazzup lets you put in a keyword or hashtag to search and show you every single time it’s appeared.

The important thing here is not to identify popular hashtags or keywords but to notice conversations that are going on. If you can identify trends in search engine data you’ll have opportunities to get ahead before everyone else.

Google Alerts

Google Alerts is a great way to find trending keyword phrases based on news stories to keep rotating in and out of your keyword strategy.

When setting up these email alerts, you can choose how often you want to receive them, where you want your information to come from, and what part of the world you want to focus on.

SpyFu not only helps you find keywords that your competitors are using, it can also tell you every keyword they ever purchased on Google Ads, every word they rank for organically, and every ad variation they ever used up to nine years.

It’s easy to use and only requires you to copy and paste your competitor’s domain into their search bar that will generate a long report that you can export as a PDF.

A paid plan will get all of SpyFu’s results,  but you can get unlimited searches and results for as low as $49 per month.

iSpionage helps you do extensive keyword research by providing lists of past and current advertisers that have overlapping keywords with your campaigns. It’s handy if you’re trying to build out a PPC campaign but unsure where to start.

This tool can track your competitors’ landing pages with notifications on when a change appears on the page they’re sending their ad traffic to. iSpionage also lets you stay on top of competitor keywords and get ideas on landing page optimization tricks for your target audience.

Wordtracker does more than show you pieces of keyword data like search volume and competition. It also focuses on providing insights that help optimize your traffic quality and profits based on targeted keywords.

There’s a free demo version on their site that gives you a taste of what to expect.

Traffic Travis / AffiloTools

Traffic Travis is for PC and AffiloTools is for Macs.

These tools act as a full-scale SEO boost to make sure your on-page tags are up to scratch and to understand how to improve your site overall.

They also help you find which keywords you’re losing out on to your competition. With this knowledge, you can prioritize adding keywords to your campaign lists and building out others via on-page content and higher bidding.

KeywordSpy, like the others, lets you see the lists of keywords your competitors are using.

SEO Book Keyword Typos Generator

Look through your Keyword list to identify plausible typos. Then use another keyword tool to check the traffic of that keyword to see if it makes sense to bid on the typo.

Google is getting much better at identifying typos, but that doesn’t mean a really common one isn’t worth looking at. It may even yield quality traffic at a lower bid level than correctly spelled keywords.

Using these tools can help you improve your Keyword Research and become a better successful business.
